Home Renovation Planning and Preparation
A home renovation is just as exciting as it is fulfilling; however, it’s important to plan everything beforehand, otherwise, you could end up dealing with a lot more stress than you bargained for.
When people take on home improvement projects, they only think about the end result. In this article, we are going to help you prepare your house for a complete renovation. You’ll learn why you should pack your belongings, cover your furniture, move plants outside, and how to prepare yourself mentally.
We can all agree that a home renovation isn’t going to be the most stress-free experience, but we are here to give you some tips on how to minimize this stress.
1. Pack Away as Many Belongings as Possible
Whether you’re renovating your house yourself or hiring an experienced professional, it’s essential to have everything packed away.
There needs to be enough space to move around, carry materials throughout your home, and fit ladders and other equipment.
What’s more, if your home isn’t tidy, it dramatically increases the chance of injury. It only takes one object left out to cause somebody to fall over and injure themselves.Combine that with the fact that most professionals will be carrying heavy material, and it’s a recipe for disaster.
With that being said, we recommend putting everything in your garage for the time being.
2.Cover Your Furniture and Vents
During a house renovation, there’s going to be lots of dust, paint, and materials everywhere. For that reason, it’s important to cover your furniture, otherwise, it could get damaged.
Especially if you’re carrying out the work yourself.
We recommend covering everything with drop cloths or clear dust-proof plastic. Using these methods means your furniture won’t need to be moved to a different location.
So how about the vents!?
If you don’t cover the air vents in your home, the filter will get clogged up with dust. Dusty air filters aren’t ideal for your health; but most importantly, will reduce the flow of cold air.
You can cover air vents using dust-proof plastic. Make sure you tape the edge down, ensuring it doesn’t fall off.
3.Move Any Plants Outside
While your plants may look pretty, they have no business being inside during a renovation project. The dust will form a layer on the plants, preventing them from getting sufficient sunlight.
Similar to personal belongings, they also pose a health and safety hazard. For this reason, we recommend relocating them to your backyard while your home is being renovated.
Alternatively, you can keep them in your garage; however, don’t forget to take them out every so often, otherwise, they won’t get enough sunlight.
4.Mentally Prepare and Plan Your Living Arrangement
Depending on the size of your renovation, it can be super stressful. That’s why it’s important to use the tips in this article to help you prepare.
With that being said, the best tip we can give is to plan your living arrangement beforehand.
Are you going to have a
kitchen renovation?
Then why not cook meals beforehand and freeze them, so you still have access to home-cooked food.
The same rule applies to all areas of your home. If your bedroom is the first room to be renovated, you need to ensure that you have a place to sleep at night.
In this scenario, we recommend moving your bed into the lounge, providing there isn’t any construction work taking place.
