Tips on Choosing the Ideal Paint Colour for Your Bathroom

Choosing the right paint for your bathroom can transform it into a relaxing oasis. But what exactly is the ‘right’ colour?

There is no precise strategy for choosing the best paint—taste is subjective, after all. But if you’ve found yourself waffling over what to do, here are a few tips to keep in mind.

Consider the Bathroom Size

Paint can influence the look and feel of your bathroom. If you have a small bathroom, for example, bright colours give the illusion of a larger and cleaner space. Consider off-whites, pastel blues, and light greys.

On the other hand, an overly large bathroom may feel unwelcoming. Combat this with darker shades; an accent wall painted navy blue, slate grey, or even black can make things cozier, cooler, and visually striking—especially when they contrast with the bright white of any ceramic fixtures.

Take Into Account the Lighting and Flooring

The colour of your floor and the type of lighting you have impact the look of your walls.

Ask yourself the following: How much lighting does your bathroom have? Is the lighting cool or warm? You will need to experiment. Does the paint look good with all the lights on? How about in natural sunlight?

The paint should also complement your flooring. If you have monochrome flooring, it should not be difficult to find matching paint. Take into consideration the colour of bath mats, too—everything needs to tie together.

Decide on the Overall Colour Scheme

Remember all the elements of a bathroom when deciding on the colour scheme. Consider the colours of the bathroom vanities , cabinets, mats, and shower curtains.

What do you want to use as a focal point for your bathroom? If it is a faucet or mirror, choose a paint that blends easily into the background so that your focal point can stand out.

When deciding a colour scheme, you can follow the rule of three. This principle guides you to choose three colours: one rich colour, an accent, and something neutral. Use the lightest colour the most—it should constitute about 70% of the colour scheme.

Use the second lightest colour for about 20% of the painting and elements; the boldest colour should constitute the last 10% of the scheme.

You can also mix two neutral colours. This helps in making your bathroom look calm and serene. When doing this, use a 70/30 proportion and let the calmest colour constitute 70% of the scheme.

If you don't want to use either of the colour scheme rules, you can opt for the “Three Times” rule. With this method, you should use a colour you pick three times. To wit, if you use one colour for your walls, you can also use it for two other elements such as your vanity, towels, or bathroom cabinet.

Match the Colour With Your Vanity and Faucet

Don’t overthink things! If your bathroom has too many colours, it will start to look busy. This is why it is best to choose colours that match or complement your bathroom vanity. An off-white or pastel-coloured wall works well with a dark vanity, and vice versa.
